The design of Yagumitan, meaning "the honey seeker in the valley," is a testament to the designers' ingenuity. The bottle, designed as a "diamond" cut, signifies the high quality of the product. The outer packaging, shaped like an undulating valley with a compass-shaped gap, conveys the core theme of the product - the quest for the scarcest wild honey in China.
The design process involved meticulous planning and execution. The designers started with simple sketches to determine the initial design model, estimated the approximate scale size, and then used model software to create the container and box model. The main graphic elements were then designed to complement the overall aesthetic.
The designers faced two significant challenges during the design process. One was to make the cut surface of the container more reasonable to enhance glass refraction. The other was to highlight the texture of the honey. After comparing the size and position of the cut surface with the sample, they chose the current style and used colored glass technology for the container.
The designers' research led them to the diamond symbol, which they believed best represented the scarcity of Yagumitan. The diamond elements were dispersed and integrated into the boxes and containers. The designers also used the compass to indicate search and contour lines and mountain cuts to represent valley cliffs, symbolizing the best wild honey hidden within.
The project, which started in November 2017 in Wuxi and finished in September 2018 in Shenzheni, was awarded the If Packaging Design Award in Germany in January 2019. The designers' commitment to capturing the essence of scarcity and quality of wild honey in their design has been recognized and applauded in the design community.
The Yagumitan design is a testament to the designers' ability to capture the essence of a product and its origins in their design. The design not only serves a functional purpose but also tells a story, making it a unique and memorable experience for consumers.
